Gods, this is OLD! There's so much stale stuff in here, and it's so clearly
NOT being maintained, that I vote for killing this document soon and
moving everything into the Handbook. The FAQ needs to be "driven" a lot
more aggressively than it has been, and since that's clearly never going to
happen then we should kill it to halt the spread of outdated information.

Who guarantees then that the handbook will be maintained on a more

Nothing guarantees anything, but if I go purely by historical record
then I think it's a more than reasonable bet that the Handbook will be
maintained far more aggressively than the FAQ.

Well, as the saying goes "Never leave port with two chronometers,
bring one or three, but never two".

Now we only have one out-of-date-and-incomplete document.

Nobody. :(

As I've said before (probably in the doc list), I see the ideal
FAQ as a dynamic document addressing relatively narrow topics
with quick well defined answers. It should be highly responsive
to the *current* state of FreeBSD, documenting quirks in
particular releases, common pitfalls and the like. The handbook,
on the other hand, should be for more in depth topics that cannot
adequately be addressed in a 2-5 paragraph FAQ answer. Generally
the topics are a bit more stable than FAQ topics, for example the
Printing chapter.

The FAQ addresses "I've got this little problem" or "Will X
work?". The handbook addresses "I want to learn all about Y".

Ultimately putting FAQ type material in the handbook would be
counterproductive.

Also, maintaining a good FAQ is no fun. It means camping out on
the questions list where the people most qualified to answer the
questions are invariably the same people who don't want to spend
time reading and responding. This is where monitary incentives
are used in commercial ventures.

Right. I fear maintaining a handbook might be harder than to maintain
a list of solutions for some frequently asked questions. A handbook
tends to tell things more verbose ...

Furthermore a FAQ is a handy source of crucial information. less
people tend to browse through a handbook... Although it's not bad
to have one ;-))

Well, then include the FAQ as Appendix F in the handbook ;-)
And make a good index ;-))

We never discussed the merits of having *a* FAQ, simply the merits of
keeping our *current* FAQ. I agree fully with John that a FAQ is a
useful resource for answering topical questions but, as John also
pointed, an unmaintained FAQ is nothing better than a home for
outdated [mis]information and not very useful.

Until we find a FAQ maintainer who truly takes it seriously, as none
of our last few FAQ maintainers have done, we need to kill it. Once
we can find a motivated FAQ coordinator who truly understands what the
FAQ's all about and has time to do it justice, we can bring it back.
